There is nothing more enticing, disenchanting, and enslaving than the life at sea ‘or in ME218’

PICture This:
The year is 2180 and the Second Cold War is getting more lukewarm every day. As a crew member on SPUDPIC, the successor of Sputnik in the newest rendition of the Space Race, you're one of the first human beings to set foot on Mars. Well, if we're being pedantic, no foot was actually set yet as Mars is almost entirely covered by a menacing, rust-colored sea and stepping foot out of your submarine would mean certain death.
Your submarine, by the way, is minuscule. You are part of a 3 person team operating the sub's 3 station rooms (CONN, SONAR, and TORPEDO), each if which is about the size of your closet back home, which you jarringly remember is over 90 million miles away. Sure, you wish there was more space, you miss the blue skies and seas of Earth, and you'd really appreciate some human contact that wasn't one of your fellow station operators, but the very worst thing about being down in these murky Martian waters is the tones. The blaring, high-pitched, seemingly never-ending tones. What are the tones? I'm glad you asked. The tones are the only way submarines can communicate here. You see, the extreme and unusual environment on Mars is not conducive to many common communication forms (e.g. radio), and the earliest pioneers (Ed, Karl, and Arul) found that the best way to communicate was through sound waves. Unfortunately our ears disagreed... The conditions aren't ideal, but you've got a job to do. Your sub is but one of 8 roaming these waters, and there isn't enough space down here for all of you. You've heard it said that you should PIC your battles, but that isn't a luxury you can afford anymore. Using these tones, you have to locate and sink every single other sub to make sure that it's your flag planted in the last remaining patch of Martian dry land at the end of the day. It's life or death. No turning back now. |
